[edit] Overview
The Fesitval of Neighborhoods is an opportunity for people to learn about neighborhood planning in a fesitval atmosphere. It will be held at the City Park Botanical Gardens on June 24th, 2006 from 9 to 5. A big tent will house neighborhood and nonprofit organizations that will inform people of the resources they have to assist in rebuilding. There will be an art market, the Mid-City Art Market with 30 to 40 tents. (Pending: The Court of Two Sisters Pavillion will host a Tulane-sponsored display of academic institutions.) The Pavillion of Two Sisters can be rented for $1500.00. We would have to break it down at 4:00 pm and be out of there by 5:00 pm, no excuses. We are waiting to hear from Jeanne Nathan to know if we need to rent the Pavillion for a display of local learning institutions.

[edit] Festival of Neighborhoods to Showcase Grassroots Impact on the Rebuilding of New Orleans
June 15, 2006
[edit] CONTACT:
- Jeanne Nathan, 504.218.4807
- Jared Zeller, 504.460.5957
[edit] WHAT:
The first time ever, the numerous neighborhood organizations of New Orleans will gather to showcase their recovery and planning efforts in a collaborative event, the Festival of Neighborhoods. Organized by a number of neighborhood organizations and community non-profits, the festival will not only educate the public about the significant work of everyday, dedicated citizens moving forward to restore and revitalize their communities, but will also help neighborhood groups network with non-profits, governmental bodies and each other. Many neighborhood associations will display maps, diagrams and other documents, some of which have never been released, that are a testament to the importance of grassroots research and planning in the recovery process.
The public is encouraged to attend and learn more about what the past nine months of civic participation and grassroots effort have yielded. The Festival of Neighborhoods is being held in conjunction with and next to the Mid-City Art Market. There will be food, drinks and live music. Admission is free.
[edit] WHEN:
Saturday, June 24, 10am – 4pm
[edit] WHERE:
City Park Botanical Gardens
[edit] WHO:
This event is a collaborative presentation of the Neighborhood Planning Network, Preservation Resource Center, the New Orleans Housing Resource Center, Mercy Corps, the New Orleans Neighborhood Development Collaborative, the Mid-City Neighborhood Association, Cityworks, City Park and the Mid-City Art Market.
Neighborhood organizations, non-profits and vendors wishing to participate should contact Charmaine at 527-0499.
[edit] WHY:
For the past nine months, the individual residents comprising literally hundreds of New Orleans neighborhood associations have worked indefatigably to bring their communities out of post-Katrina crisis mode and into the city's vision for a better, brighter future. The Festival of Neighborhoods will allow these groups to showcase and celebrate their efforts to the public in a relaxed environment.
[edit] Old Press Release
Neighborhood Festival
The Neighborhood Planning Network, The Preservation Resource Center, The New Orleans Housing Resource Center, Mercy Corps, the New Orleans Neighborhood Development Collaborative and the Mid City Neighborhood Association invite all New Orleans neighborhood groups to participate in the Festival of Neighborhoods. The festival will be held in the Botanical Gardens in City Park in conjunction with the Mid City Art Market on Saturday, June 24, 2006, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Art Market will be in one area, the festival right next door. Food and beverages will be sold and there will be live music.
The purpose of the festival is to showcase neighborhood planning and recovery efforts and to provide a venue for residents throughout the city to network in a relaxed, festive environment and to learn about what other neighborhoods have accomplished. Tents, tables, and chairs will be provided. There is no charge. We are also inviting nonprofits and other vendors that can be of service to neighborhoods and their residents in their recovery effort, such as Global Green, City Works, representatives from the Louisiana Recovery Authority, etc, etc. etc.
Neighborhoods can showcase whatever they choose but we urge you to display (distribute) items related to your planning efforts: pictures, maps, models, survey instruments, plans, etc. One 4 X 8 table, under a tent, will be available for each neighborhood. To display large maps, etc, you must bring your own easel. You can also sell t-shirts, pins, bumper stickers, raffle tickets, etc.
Come join us in this fun, informative, and exciting event. You must register your organization in order to participate. Please email or fax the following information to

[edit] Lessons Learned
- Facilitate partnerships between other groups (between adjacent neighborhood associations that might have difficulty finding volunteers)
- Better sign-up form (online form rather than PDF)
- More confirmations!!
- Clearer expectations BUT...
- Let groups know we’re flexible (event can be used for planning, membership, or whatever the need of the neighborhood association might be)
- More advanced notice
- Our own catering
- Continue with our incredible marketing and media outreach (make sure credit is given where credit is due)
- Extended or multi-day events (large event but smaller kick-off and round-up events)
- Possible event from 3 to 6pm on a Sunday
- Contacting other umbrella groups and collaborating with their events
- Offer to help neighborhood associations with handouts (if an issue)

- School openings
- Partnering with existing neighborhood events, providing best practices
- Partnering with farmers’ markets
- Joe Brown Park as a possible venue

[edit] What’s Next?
- Look for venues with services and facilities
- Get experts to speak
- Make fact sheets about how to organize similar neighborhood festivals
- Interactive internet workstations/help desk
- Partnership with neighborhoods and shop for neighborhoods that want events
- Workshops/toolkit for neighborhood festivals
- Schedule next festival organizational meeting and announce the beginning of the planning process
- Meetings to organize the next festival are tentatively scheduled for 2pm Thursday afternoons at the PRC, contingent on Michelle’s confirmation (MK has an ongoing conflict at this time. Can we pick an alternative date & time?)
- Set clear time frame early (2 ½ months before a citywide festival)
- Partner with small events like GP art, farmers’ markets, Mercy Corps drum circle, Bywater Art Market, Lakeview Fest, Mid-City Art Market, Satchamo Fest, school and church events, grand openings, RI trailer park plock parties, Mercy Corps event on White Buffalo Day (August 27)
- Possible satellite events in Houston and/or Atlanta (Who are our partner organizations in other cities? PRC can help with preservation partners through NTHP.)
- Contact African American Museum and find out if they have upcoming events (PRC can contact. May be able to arrange an event there nonetheless.)
